LED Home Lighting Review & Test Results

This page displays our test results, using various LED halogen replacements. Other LED globes suitable as replacements for incandescent and CFL lights are also being tested.

See our LIGHTING page for more general information on the different types of LED & CFL lighting.

Our LED Lighting Tests have the results stated in lux. We chose lux, for the following reasons:

  • The lux (symbol: lx) is the International symbol (unit) of illuminance and luminous emittance measuring luminous power over a given area. One can think of luminous flux as a measure of the total "amount" of visible light present, and the illuminance is a measure of the intensity of illumination on a surface. A given amount of light will illuminate a surface more dimly if it is spread over a larger area, so illuminance is inversely proportional to area.
  • Luminous flux is measured in lumens. One lux is equal to one lumen per square metre. The difference between the lux and the lumen is that the lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread.
  • A flux of 1,000 lumens, concentrated into an area of one square metre, lights up that square metre with an illuminance of 1,000 lux. However, the same 1,000 lumens, spread out over ten square metres, produces a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux.

LED Halogen Downlight Replacement Comparison

The following was taken into account when testing:

  • Average Aussie home ceiling height 2.4 m.
  • Average table height 75 -85 cm.
  • Distance from light source to meter 1.65 m.
  • Room condition dark, navigation only by touch.

The lux reading was taken directly under the light source and at various readings outwards from the centre. All globes were on for five minutes before readings were taken, to eliminate any warm up issues, even though this should not occur with LED technology.

Interestingly enough when all globes were tested for a second time readings differed on all globes. Making us believe this may be due to changes in the mains input. When tested as below the mains was recorded at 245 volts.

Halogen Replacement Style Globes

With Bayonet Cap & Edison Screw Fittings

60 SMD 3528 Edison Screw FittingDid you know that the 240 volt version of the halogen replacement [GU10 fitting], comes with alternative fittings? These alternative fittings allowing you to easily replace your existing bayonet cap [B22 fitting] or Edison Screw [E27 fitting] light globes, to the new low energy LED globes.

This is a great move forwards in flexibility, as now LED lighting can easily be incorporated into the average Aussie home.

GU10 To Bayonet Cap B22 AdaptorThere are also adaptors available allowing GU10 style globes to be installed directly into B22 & E27 fittings. Further adaptors allowing B22 to be installed into E27 and vice versa are also available.

By using a mixture of these low energy LED globes and adaptors, we in the process of replacing incandescent & CFL globes in an Aussie home. We will be reporting on the changes and forecast savings in the future.

More LED Incandescent & CFL Replacements

7 SMD 5050 E27 2.5 WATT LED GLOBEWe are in the process of testing other LED globes suitable for installation into existing bayonet cap [B22] & Edison screw style fittings [E27]. What the difference is with these fittings is the inclusion of shades to help with light dispersion and designs being focussed on maximising the light when the globes are used in non-downlight situations, direction and with shades. The installation of these globes is as simple as removing the existing globe and installing the LED replacement.

22 SMD 5050 B22 6 WATT LED GLOBEBoth of the globes shown here would be suitable as a direct replacement for an incandescent light globe of 25 - 40 watts.
